NYConnects is a programme whereby experts in a particular industry shares their valuable experiences. We met three speakers today – Nicolette Tan, Valerie Neo and Khee Shihui.

Nicolette Tan

For the first talk, the speaker outlined the idea of a Smart Nation and addressed the main concerns pertaining to it. She explained about the pros and cons of the tapping technology into our daily lives. We learnt that the hardest part of integrating technology into our everyday activities and transactions is that sometimes, people are not willing to adjust their lifestyle. This is an important point for us to take note of because it reminds us that our innovative product may not be well-received. Hence, we should constantly take into consideration the best interests of our target audience and ponder about how we can get them to open up to technological changes. We can solve this by showing them how technology can add convenience and enjoyment into their lives, find cheaper ways of doing things.

Valerie Neo

For the second talk, the speaker shared about the empowerment of women. Through close collaboration with like-minded people of diverse background, she strives to make a difference in our society and achieve gender equality by taking small steps at a time. Her non-profit organisation, Adona Foundation, works hand in hand with many different other organisations such as care4girls, which is based in Malawi. She believes that women should show care and support for each other. In other words, they empower women, who in turn empower other women around them.

Khee Shihui

During the third talk, the speaker advocated zero waste living. She shared with us the dangerous consequences of plastic waste, such as micro plastics ending up in our body, and the reduction of oxygen on Earth. In addition, she effectively convinced us that making an effort to reduce waste is not very difficult. The only thing you have to do is to bring a lunchbox, cup and tote bag with you at all times and avoid using takeaway boxes, paper cups and plastic bags. This is essential to ensure sustainability on Earth.
