Entertainment Module

Session 1

In entertainment, we learnt what was entertaining and what was not. We used the example of the safety videos that airlines play for all passengers before takeoff. The United Airlines video was dry and typical, like any other safety video. In comparison, the Turkish Airlines captured everyone’s attention with the use of LEGO movie characters. Also, the Singapore Airlines one was engaging as well, however in a different way. It introduced the different landmarks of Singapore in the video. It is important to have your audience focus on you when you present, especially in the case of this safety video. You need to ensure that everyone is informed of the safety features of your aircraft as it concerns the health and life of all passengers. If the video is not interesting, the passengers will not be attentive and might not know some safety features of the aircraft.

Hence, in our prototype, we should make our service or produce more engaging and not too typical or boring. This is so that our product or service will actually benefit the elderly and perform the function it is produced for. Thus, we have to first understand how to capture the elderly’s attention by knowing what interest them and what doesn’t. We can know this with our experience interacting with the elderly. For example, one session we had a singing activity with the elderly. Once we ran out of oldies for them to sing to, we started playing pop music, and that ended up in a disaster. This has taught us what the elderly enjoy listening to.

Session 2

For our second entertainment module session, we were shown two videos: one advertising a visa pay cash card, and the other promoting a therapy dog.

Here are the links for the videos:

After watching these videos, we had to answer to questions:

  • Would there be people that might not find the video entertaining? Why?

This question prompted us to ponder about the different people and personalities we are serving, as well as their needs and requirements. For example, the therapy dog video would not provide entertainment to those who either dislike dogs or have specific reasons as to why they are not supposed to interact with dogs. Hence, this question is a good thinking prompt to start us on crafting our documentary sensibly.
